“When women support each other, incredible things happen.”

This simple yet profound truth defines the spirit of the Young Environmentalists Programme Trust (YEPT), which since 2008 has been bridging the gender gap, empowering women, and pioneering innovative environmental advocacy on a global scale. Through its flagship Women Achievers Awards and dynamic partnerships with educational institutions, women-led NGOs, and coastal communities, YEPT is redefining what it means to be an agent of change in the 21st century.

Celebrating Women Achievers and Global Collaborations

Elaborates Elsie Gabriel its Founder, “The Women Achievers Awards, inaugurated in 2008, honor trailblazing women who have made significant contributions across various sectors. By celebrating role models such as industry leaders, social workers, and environmental advocates, YEPT not only recognizes excellence but also inspires a new generation of women to step forward and lead. Collaborations with renowned partners have helped highlight outstanding achievements, whether in professional excellence or environmental activism, reinforcing the message that empowered women can drive meaningful change.”

Promoting Ocean Literacy and Youth Engagement

Central to YEPT’s mission is its commitment to ocean literacy. Working with hundreds of schools and colleges, YEPT delivers immersive educational experiences through coastal field trips, hands-on workshops, and interactive digital platforms. These initiatives ignite youth engagement by connecting students directly with marine ecosystems and fostering dialogue between future leaders and policy decision-makers. YEPT’s advocacy extends to global forums, as evidenced by its significant contributions to the Venice Declaration on Ocean Literacy—a landmark effort aimed at integrating comprehensive ocean and climate education into national curricula worldwide.

Invited on the Global Stage for Climate and Ocean Advocacy

YEPT’s groundbreaking initiatives have earned invitations to several United Nations climate conferences, international ocean conferences, and specialized workshops. The organization’s Ocean Literacy project is proudly recognized as part of UNESCO’s Green Citizens project—a testament to its innovative approach and impact in marine conservation. With its active participation at these global events, YEPT is working tirelessly to shape policy frameworks that integrate ocean literacy and climate education at the highest levels, ensuring that sustainable environmental practices are embedded in public policy.

Empowering Women Through Strategic NGO Partnerships

In a world where collaboration is key, YEPT has strategically partnered with women-led non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to amplify its impact on women’s empowerment and environmental sustainability. By working alongside other organizations YEPT creates platforms for women to share knowledge, access leadership opportunities, and secure funding for conservation projects. This synergistic approach not only uplifts women but also strengthens community resilience and promotes sustainable environmental practices.

Inclusive Initiatives in Coastal Communities

Expanding its outreach to coastal areas, YEPT has forged vital partnerships with the Handicapped Scuba Association (HSA) USA to promote inclusion and sustainability among marginalized groups. In regions such as the Lakshadweep Islands, Havelock Island, Kerala, Goa, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and beyond, specialized adaptive diving programs empower indigenous communities and individuals with disabilities. These initiatives provide essential training, foster environmental stewardship, and offer indigenous women sustainable livelihood opportunities. By integrating traditional ecological knowledge with modern conservation practices, YEPT is paving the way for a more inclusive and resilient future in marine conservation.

A Global Movement for Sustainable Change

From recognizing women achievers to engaging youth in ocean literacy and empowering marginalized communities, the Young Environmentalists Programme Trust is spearheading a multifaceted global movement. Its extensive network of collaborations and commitment to inclusivity has positioned YEPT at the forefront of environmental advocacy and sustainable development. By ensuring that every voice—especially those from historically underrepresented communities—is heard, YEPT is driving a transformative dialogue on climate action and ocean conservation that resonates worldwide.

Through these initiatives, the Young Environmentalists Programme Trust continues to empower women, foster youth engagement, and promote sustainable practices, ultimately shaping a future where environmental stewardship and social inclusion go hand in hand
